Senior Dog Nutrition

Loving our dogs means loving them through all their stages of life. And one of the most important stages, when they sometimes need more patience and care, is their golden years. Just like us humans we may slow down a bit and have some aches and pains, but we still want to enjoy our life and be loved.

Here are four of my favourite supplements that will help your senior dog live their best life!

  • Turmeric – This spice should be in every senior dog’s diet just for the anti-inflammatory benefits alone. It can also help with pain relief as the anti-inflammatory benefits will help with joint pain, stiffness, and overall comfort. Turmeric is also high in antioxidants which helps with the aging process to fight free radicals and slow cellular oxidation.
  • Reishi Mushrooms – Great for both humans and dogs to take as it boosts your immune system! Reishi is also good for liver support which is essential to an aging dog as it is one of the main elimination organs. It’s also an adaptogenic which can help an aging dog with stress and anxiety.
  • Digestive Enzymes – These are important for senior dogs because as they age their digestion can get impaired and they don’t break down food as well, so they aren’t absorbing nutrients as efficiently. Digestive enzymes will also help with gas and bloating because it doesn’t let food sit and ferment, it helps everything move along the digestive tract. Improved digestion also helps with their immune system and overall energy because they are absorbing the nutrients they need to have their body function optimally.
  • CBD – Who doesn’t love CBD! This can be a game changer for a senior dog! It helps with pain relief, it helps promote healthy sleep and it helps with stress and anxiety. CBD is also anti-inflammatory and can help stimulate the appetite for a dog who doesn’t seem as interested in food.

Try adding some of these to your dog’s daily protocol and take note of the positive changes. Make sure to always check with your holistic vet before adding a new supplement.
